Motorists and commuters plying the Akure-Ondo road in Ondo State have raised the alarm over the deplorable condition of the road which had been cut off following heavy rain at Owena axis of the road in Idanre Local Government Area of the state.
This is just as thousands of travellers were stranded on the road on Saturday for house as the bad portion caused traffic gridlock while the section of the road is gradually becoming a death trap.
Many vehicles were trapped in the waterlogged section of the road, thereby making motorists spend several hours on the road while some travellers prefer to turn back and use the Ile Oluji/ Ilesha road to link Akure or Ondo.
Some of the motorists who spoke with Nigerian Tribune, blamed the Federal Roads Maintenance Agency, (FERMA) for failing to live up to expectations while the state government is also not bothered by the state of the bad portion on the road.
A traveller, Imoleayo Adekunle, who called for urgent intervention lamented that traders who ply their business between Akure and Okitipupa and Ilaje axis have stopped going to markets for seafood, saying this adversely affecting the economy of the state.
He appealed to the state government to fix the road if the FERMA refused to attend to the road in order to reduce the suffering of travellers on the road.
A member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state, Mr Segun Odidi appealed to Governor Rotimi Akeredolu to quickly attend to the road to reduce the hardship of the travellers.
Odidi said, “Ondo State government should help to provide temporary measures and fix the Akure to Ondo road at Owena area of the road. I know this is a Federal road but the pain people are going through on the road is unbearable now.
“I had to drive from Ondo through Ileoluji to Ilesha expressway before I could connect to Akure yesterday, making a journey of less than 30 minutes to caused me almost two hours since the normal route has been rendered impassable.
“Please, come to the aid of our people the way you have always been doing on that failed portion of the road in Owena axis.
“Also the failed portion of Ondo-Ife rd at Valentino axis of the town is becoming a nightmare to motorists, help us fix this portion Also, I gave credit to the state government for their previous interventions on these aforementioned roads in the past, we need your intervention now”.
